After a prolonged phase of slowdown, the Italian Footwear industry is beginning to show cautious signs of recovery. Recent findings from the Confindustria Moda Research Centre for Assocalzaturifici suggest that while overall revenues during the first nine months of 2025 declined by 4.1 percent, the third quarter brought a noticeable easing of pressure. Turnover slipped by just 0.9 percent during this period, marking a significant improvement from sharper declines seen earlier in the year. Industry observers view this stabilisation as an early indication that the sector may be approaching a turning point rather than continuing a steep descent.
Exports continue to anchor the industry, offering much needed resilience. Shipment volumes rose by 4.3 percent to nearly 132 million pairs during the first eight months of the year, even as export value softened due to price corrections. The European Union remained the dominant destination, absorbing nearly seventy percent of exported footwear. Germany emerged as a standout performer, while demand in the Middle East strengthened, led by the United Arab Emirates. In contrast, Far East markets weakened, with China registering a sharp decline.Key export trends include
• Higher shipment volumes despite lower average prices
• Strong recovery signals from European partners
• Growing opportunities in Middle Eastern markets
Domestic Challenges and Cautious Optimism
At home, footwear consumption remained largely flat, though a modest rise in third quarter volumes helped narrow the gap with last year levels. Structural challenges persist, with fewer active manufacturers and a gradual decline in employment reflecting ongoing consolidation. Despite these pressures, Assocalzaturifici president Giovanna Ceolini described the current phase as the first light at the end of a long recessionary tunnel. Sector turnover for 2025 is expected to approach 15 billion dollars, slightly below last year, yet far more stable than earlier forecasts suggested.
While uncertainty remains, especially around jobs and production capacity, the blend of export resilience and improving quarterly trends offers renewed confidence that Italian footwear is slowly regaining balance in a demanding global landscape.
