India's Textile Exports Surge Globally, Growing in 111 Nations Despite High US Tariffs

India's textile sector has achieved major success through market diversification. Between April and September 2025, textile exports recorded growth in a remarkable 111 countries, bringing in $8.5 billion and showing a 10% increase in revenue from these markets. This aggressive push into new territories yielded especially strong results in 38 countries, where exports shot up by more than 50%. This widespread global acceptance proves that India's efforts to find new buyers are successfully reducing reliance on traditional markets.

This surge in global sales was crucial because India's single largest market, the United States, became a major challenge. The US imposed new tariffs, forcing Indian apparel exports to face duties as high as 63.9%. These high taxes put Indian exporters at a significant price disadvantage compared to competitors like Vietnam and Bangladesh. As a direct result, India's textile exports to the US during the same period fell by 2.6%, confirming that the government needed a strong backup plan to protect the industry from severe losses and potential job cuts.

To counter the US difficulty, the government launched a focused strategy to promote textiles in new, high-potential destinations. They identified and targeted 40 key markets spanning North America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Dedicated outreach programs were organized to specifically boost sales of apparel, Home textiles, and technical textiles. Furthermore, the government is leveraging Free Trade Agreements (FTAs), such as the recently signed agreement with the UK, to secure preferential access and position India as a reliable source of quality and sustainable textiles.

The success of this diversification strategy directly supports India's long-term economic ambition for the textile industry. The country has set a highly ambitious goal to boost total textile exports from the current $37.7 billion to $100 billion by the year 2030. By ferociously expanding market share, achieving double-digit growth in new economies, and continuing to focus on product categories with high demand, these recent results show that India is firmly on track to achieve its goal and become a dominant player in the global textile trade.
